November blog catch-up series: Destin

As most of you know, when Amelia was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, it was the week before Mike and I were supposed to go on a cruise to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We had saved all year long for this fun trip and spent SOOOO many hours planning out every detail. Well... it didn't happen. And we thought we'd probably never get away again, at least not for many years. But, well, then Amelia DIDN'T have diabetes. So, first of all, Hallelujah! Second of all, when can we get away???

Thanks to my parents and our credit card points (mostly accrued through Mike's work purchases - score!), we managed to get away for a long weekend in November to Destin. No, it's not a cruise, BUT it is our favorite place to vacation and where we spent most of our honeymoon. So I guess it was fitting that we return there for the big 1-0 celebration.

Mike's coworkers blew our minds when they surprised us with a card full of gift cards for our trip... restaurants, Starbucks, American Express gift cards... we were BLOWN AWAY. Seriously one of the nicest things any one's ever done for us. It really allowed us to have a great time and not worry about money so much. Such a blessing.

Without further ado, here are our pics from that trip. You'd think since the girls weren't there we wouldn't have had much to photograph, but actually we thoroughly enjoyed returning to our love of photographing nature. And the occasional arm-length self portrait, of course.

We made it. Ahhh....

It was so secluded it was heavenly. Not warm enough for only swimsuits or swimming (although there were some idiots, er, brave souls who got in), but warm enough to sit in a beach chair and read and rest. I'll take it!

The view from our room.

If you stood back far enough, it almost looked like we were on a cruise. :)

Time for some cheesy self-portraits.

I can't stand photos alone, so of course I had to diffuse the awkward moment by being more awkward.

Our last morning, Mike set his alarm and got up to get us Starbucks, then came and woke me up to catch the last bit of the sunrise. I wasn't too sure about the idea (seeing as how it was our last day to sleep in), but I am glad we did it.

Thank you again, mom and dad, for keeping the girls and making this getaway possible. We will try to forget that we returned to a week full of the stomach bug back home. Ha!

Great pictures! So glad for you guys! My favorite was the one where it "looks" like you're on a cruise. You crack me up.
